First came to Venango County in 1787 in United States Commissary
service under Captain Jonathan Hart with soldiers who erected Fort
Franklin. After completing service here moved on to Fort Washington
(now Cincinnati) Ohio and then to Vincennes Indiana a French town
on the Wabash.
In 1790 he returned to Franklin by horseback from Indiana. Brining
with him a small stock in which he traded with the Indians immediately
succeeding the first trader John Frazier who was driven out by the
French. He pitched a tent near the upper French Creek bridge near
the United States Garrison. He traded his goods for skins and fur
which he sold in Pittsburgh. He communicated with the Seneca Indians
in their native tongue which he learned easily along with their
native customs.
His store stood on the bank of French Creek between what is now
13th and West Park Streets a little above the upper bridge.
He built a log house a short distance below Fort Franklin. Shortly
after his marriage in 1799 he began building a substantial stone
house in 1802 near the site of his log home which stood at Otter
& Elbow Streets on the site of Judge Trunkey's House until 1872.
It was considered a grand house of the town. Not only was it a family
home but also operated as a Hotel for several decades.
Mr. George Powers was elected County Coroner in 1814 and County
Treasurer in 1825.
